The Pipits: April 5 2025; Saltfleet area with Bob Curry

Our last outing was cancelled due to weather - the ice storm came through Ontario and immobilized a wide swath of the areas north of Halton Region. We rescheduled to Saturday April 5, and fortunately, Bob Curry was able to join us!

A group of 14 Pipits met in the early afternoon at the new Saltfleet Conservation Area. Early spring migration had begun, and the red-winged blackbirds were in! The silence of the winter has been broken, and all around us were the calls of blackbirds, song sparrows, even a swamp sparrow was heard! It was just lovely.

The weather was still not working with us and it was a grey and overcast day, with on and off drizzle that eventually became more of a constant rain as we wrapped up the outing.

After we walked the trails at Saltfleet, we moved along to Vinemount Meadows Sanctuary, where we heard and had some glimpses of two Eastern Meadowlarks. These early spring migrants always remind me that we've survived another winter!

We then went to the flooded fields at 5th Road East, which can be a good location to spot Wilson's Snipe, and other shorebirds. The rain started in earnest while we were here, and not seeing anything, we called it a wrap.

Thanks to Bob Curry for joining us as Guest Leader, we always appreciate your company!

And thank you to everyone who came out, you made it a wonderful outing!

Ebird reports can be seen in our trip report for the day:

The Pipits

The goal of The Pipits is to increase awareness of the natural world, in particular, birds, but also all other wild organisms; in a safe and inclusive social setting where we connect with each other through our mutual appreciation of the wild.
