April 2 2022, Vinemount Meadows Sanctuary

The Pipits: April 2 2022, Vinemount Meadows Sanctuary 5 Apr 2022 5:36 PMColleen Reilly (Administrator) This past Saturday was a really fun outing to Vinemount Meadows Sanctuary, with Bruce and Laurie MacKenzie!

19 Pipits joined the trip, and it was delightful as always to see Bruce and Laurie again. Bruce shared his knowledge of the history of the location, as well as his knowledge as a naturalist.

Early in the morning quite a number of Eastern Meadowlarks were singing, and could be seen quite close but as the majority of the group arrived they became more elusive.

The local pair of Kestrels also made an appearance and later in the walk, we had distant views of a third Kestrel, as well as a flock of at least 17 Common Ravens that flew over far overhead. So wonderful!

Signs of spring were also around in the Poplar catkins and Pussy Willows... and a few Tree Swallows frolicked around in the sky above us; being perturbed by our proximity to their chosen nest box!

Bruce shared a couple of articles that he's published. The first is in the Hamilton Naturalist Club's Wood Duck, Summer 2020 edition, page 5 (https://hamiltonnature.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/WD-volume-73-summer.pdf). The second is also in the Wood Duck, from March 2015, see page 148 (http://hamiltonnature.org/wp-content/uploads/pdfs/wood-duck/wood-duck-2015-03.pdf). Enjoy!

Thanks to everyone for coming out on this trip, and making it another great day out!

Colleen
