This Sunday we go to a location new to me. The Vinemount Wetland has a boardwalk through it, and Travis is going to help us explore it.

The Vinemount Swamp forest is the biggest natural forest area south of the Escarpment in the Hamilton area.  It is home to several highly significant species of birds, including the Northern Harrier and the Sedge Wren.  It also serves as a stopover for many species of migratory waterfowl and supports a heronry.  It is the only site in the Hamilton area where one will find the Edwards’ Hairstreak Butterfly, a savanna species of butterfly.  In addition, several highly significant species of plants grow within the swamp.  Because the Vinemount Swamp is a headwaters swamp, it serves an important purpose in regulating the stream flow in Forty Mile Creek and Stoney Creek. A two kilometer boardwalk gives visitors access to the heart of the swamp and allows for fantastic nature appreciation.

We will walk in from 5th road, we probably won’t do the whole boardwalk but we’ll go about halfway down and then return. It will be about a 2.5 km hike. It can be buggy at that time of year and it can be very sunny so bug spray, wide brimmed hats and long sleeves are recommended.

We park along the side of Powerline Road right before 5th Road E. The Dofasco 2000 trail picks up across 5th Road E.

Meet along the roadside at 8am.

Hope to see you there!
