Hello Pipits!
This Saturday we will be going to Point Pelee, to wander our way around this beautiful park and be stunned by the inundation of spring migrants!
We will meet at the parking lot at the Visitor Centre at 5:30 am.
I suggest you plan to arrive at the Park Gate for 5 am to give yourself time to line up and drive up to the Visitor Centre...
There is a fee to enter the Park, for more information go here: https://parks.canada.ca/pn-np/on/pelee/visit/tarifs-fees
For the first couple hours of our day, we will be walking with Guest Leader Jeremy Hatt! He is a wonderful and knowledgeable leader, so I am really looking forward to this!
Point Pelee is an important rest stop for spring migrants moving across the lake on their northern trajectory. Our trip takes place during the Festival of Birds.
"Forty-two of the 52 regularly occurring North American warblers have been spotted at Point Pelee. These colourful songbirds are in full breeding plumage and fill the woods with song. The Festival features birding hikes, lunch & learn sessions, the 100 Species Challenge and a wide range of services for expert and novice birders alike." (https://www.festivalofbirds.ca/)
My phone number is 289.795.6537. Feel free to call or text me if you need.
I think what we'll do is park at the Visitor's Centre, and take the 6am tram down to the tip of the Point and back. Likely we'll also drive to the DeLaurier Homestead and walk that trail also. I would like to additionally make our way to the Marsh Boardwalk later in the day. These plans will be fluid, as they will depend on what is being seen in the Park at the time.
Just be prepared, it will be a full day, bring lunch, or be prepared to buy it at the Visitor Centre (hot dogs, muffins, etc available until 1pm - cash only), and lots of drinks to stay hydrated.
There are washrooms at the Visitor Centre, and the trails are paved or hard packed. Please stay on the main trails in the Park, and avoid the small trails where people have broken through underbrush to go off trail.
Pishing is not permitted in the Park, and neither is playback... please be conscious of these rules and respectful.
Looking forward to seeing those who can attend!
